Robert S. Thompson, MD
Senior Investigator Emeritus
Research Interests:
Dr. Thompson is director emeritus of
Group Health Cooperative's Department of Preventive Care and an
investigator emeritus at Group Health Center for Health Studies.He is
a clinical professor of pediatrics and health services research at the
University of Washington.
His career has been dedicated to developing and implementing
evidence-based clinical prevention services. Some past examples
include work on breast cancer screening, bicycle safety helmets, and
immunizations. His overarching research interests are in effectiveness
trials of interventions, systems approaches to preventive care
delivery, and translating scientific evidence into practice programs
and services.
Dr. Thompson's primary research interests since 2004 include domestic
violence; child development; and using systems approaches to improve
hypertension care and colon cancer screening. His current work
includes improving identification and management of domestic violence
in health care organizations; the long-term health care effects of
domestic violence; and helping parents foster the healthy growth and
development of their children through the "Healthy Steps" project.
In his emeritus role, he no longer serves as the principal
investigator of research projects receiving external funding.
