Active Clinical StudiesGroup Health Center for Health Studies’ Clinical Research Program has many ongoing studies that recruit Group Health enrollees. This research is designed to contribute to disease prevention and development of treatment strategies. Our scientists receive grant funding from a variety of sources, such as the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and private foundations. Adult Changes in Thought (ACT) Initially established in 1994, this prospective cohort of over 3,300 adults, aged 65 and older, has been established to identify risk factors for cognitive decline with aging and related conditions , such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Men and women with no cognitive impairment were enrolled in this longitudinal study, and now visit the CHS Research Clinic every two years for physical and cognitive assessments. By combining this assessment data with comprehensive medical and pharmacy records, and biospecimens collected at the baseline enrollment visits, investigators have established a promising scientific resource for understanding the origins of dementia and AD. Study sponsor: National Institutes of Health The goal of this study is to investigate factors affecting bone density in young women who are actively gaining bone. Six hundred adolescents and young adult women between the ages of 14 and 30 will be recruited into the study and followed for up to three years. The study will evaluate several factors that are likely to be important in building and maintaining bone density, including diet, physical activity, race or ethnicity, family and personal history of fractures, the use of hormones and other medications. Bone density measurements will be taken at selected anatomical sites every six months. The results of this study will increase our understanding of an increasingly important women's health issue and may lead to new osteoporosis prevention services for young women.
