Radiology data consist of one record per woman per BI-RADS® mammogram. BI-RADS® (Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System) was developed by the American College of Radiology to provide a standard method of interpreting mammograms. Each mammogram is assigned two BI-RADS® codes – one for the left breast and one for the right breast. The codes are as follows:
BI-RADS assessment 0: Incomplete assessment, needs additional imaging
BI-RADS assessment 1: Normal
BI-RADS assessment 2: Benign
BI-RADS assessment 3: Probably benign
BI-RADS assessment 4: Suspicious for malignancy
BI-RADS assessment 5: Highly suggestive of malignancy
BI-RADS assessment 6: Known breast cancer
Each mammogram is also assigned a BI-RADS® breast density code. These are given separately for left and right breasts:
BI-RADS density 1: Almost entirely fat
BI-RADS density 2: Scattered firbroglandular densities
BI-RADS density 3: Heterogeneously dense
BI-RADS density 4: Extremely dense
