- Identify Breast Cancer Surveillance (BCS) data as data source appropriate for your research.
- Review history and previous topics addressed.
- Review resources including the questionnaires and data.
- Develop research question(s).
- Identify a Group Health BCS investigator or advisory committee member to ask questions about the data or process.
- Submit Proposal to Use Breast Cancer Surveillance Data.
- Group Health BCS principal investigator and Scientific Advisory committee review proposal. (Project Proposal Review Procedures)
- Refine proposal if requested.
- After approval for data use:
- Obtain appropriate Institutional Review Board approval.
- Submit Programmer Data Request.
- Complete and sign a data use agreement and memorandum of understanding.
- BCS programmers will extract data, prepare files, and send.
- Provide progress and outcome reports as requested.
- Semi-annual progress reports (March and September).
- Present research idea and/or progress to Scientific Advisory committee at a quarterly scientific meeting in Seattle (optional).
- Present research idea and/or progress to the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium meeting held in different locations in April and October (optional).
- Follow guidelines for developing, submitting and publishing manuscripts.

- Include BCS grant number on every publication.
